FAQ
Read our FAQ to learn more about the various services we provide. If you still have questions or want to explore options for your project, please contact us!
What’s your approach to customized furniture?
We take multiple approaches. If you have a cool piece of lumber that you want turned into a certain item – a mantel, headboard, or bench, for example – we can use your materials. We can show you different wood options from our own stock or order custom species. We love using reclaimed and salvaged wood as much as we can and work with sustainably-minded suppliers. We offer a range of finishing options to give you just the look you want. We use mechanical fasteners only when necessary, preferring instead to use craftsman joinery techniques which are stronger, longer-lasting and add decorative detail.
What kind of installations do you do?
Indoors: Door jambs and headers, fireplace mantles, floating shelves, TV nooks, wainscoting, crown molding, wood paneling, bead board, built-in bookshelves, and more.
Outdoors: decks, trellises, garden benches, garden boxes, planter beds, deer fences, retaining walls, garden sheds, garage shelving, shop retrofits, workbenches, and more.
Do you build small stuff?
Yes! In addition to furniture, we build all sorts of small things that make great unique gifts. Examples include kids toolboxes, pencil holders, lap desks, cornhole boards, cutting boards and more.
Can you just build it and I’ll do the rest?
Yes! We know that many of our customers enjoy the process of painting, staining and finishing, but may lack the specialty tools, time or skill needed to do an initial build. Or maybe you want to do the finishing work to save some money. We understand and won’t insist you pay for us to do more than is needed. We’ll do as much as you’d like us to and then hand over the reins. We’re passionate about the art of building and are happy to help educate you on options for finishing your project on your own. Of course, we do start-to-finish work for those who want to be hands off.
I found the perfect plan online, can you build it for me?
Yes! If you’ve already found the perfect furniture design to fit your space, you can give us the plan and we’ll build it accordingly. We can also work with you to tweak small aspects to make an almost perfect plan absolutely perfect to fit your needs.
How much do you charge?
This is not an easy question to answer, but we believe that custom furniture and services should be affordable to everyone. We work with a range of materials and can offer you many different options to stay within your budget. We’re honest and realistic about pricing, we won’t charge you more than we think is fair, and we'll tell you if something comes in significantly under budget.
Other handymen won’t call me back or say my project is not worth their time.
We understand how frustrating it can be to feel like you aren’t a priority just because you have a small need or aren’t spending big bucks. We’ve got you covered. We aren’t afraid of large projects but we also embrace small ones. We enjoy the variety in our work and are happy to bring your vision to life, no matter how small. If we are unable to do a job for you, we will be realistic and up front about our limitations. With the connections we've established over the years, we have many high quality resources we can refer you to if we are not qualified for your job.
What about my grandmother’s priceless antique hutch?
We’re honest about any limitations in our work. We do not appraise antique furniture. If you have a piece that you think is worth serious money and you’re concerned about maintaining its value as a rare antique while you restore it, you may want to consult with someone who specializes in that area. But if you have an antique that needs to be repaired or refurbished and the value you seek to preserve is simply that of having it look nice and be used, then we can definitely assess repair, refurbish and restoration options.
What about my $20 college dresser?
The best piece of furniture is the one that you love and that meets your needs. Many older pieces are built from solid wood with detailed joinery that you just don’t see in today’s mass-produced furniture. Some of our favorite pieces that we’ve refinished are “cheap” discards from others so don’t be afraid to ask us to fix something just because it’s not super fancy.
While you’re here, can you fix…?
If we’re working on site for an installation and you suddenly remember some other pesky household task you need help with, please ask. We’ll assess and let you know if it’s something we can work in that day or on a return trip. Maybe you have a door that doesn’t close properly, curtain rods that need to be mounted, or something hauled off but you don’t have a truck to do it. Just let us know how we can help you. Depending on materials involved, these are likely to be billed at a simple hourly rate.
What kind of demolition do you do?
We are not licensed and insured for large-scale demolition of buildings. However, we can take down small sheds, fences and similar features. We welcome the opportunity to salvage materials that still have life in them and which can be used for other projects. If we suspect lead paint, asbestos or other risks that require specialty services, we will let you know when to call in someone who is licensed for that type of work.
